1 Redbud Tree (Cercis canadensis)
Eastern redbud (Cercis canadensis) is a small (20 to 30 ft.) native understory tree found in woodlands throughout Ohio. Its has bright purple-pink blooms in early spring which feed native bees and butterflies when little else is flowering (Fun fact: Redbud flowers are also edible to humans!). The heart-shaped leaves are essential to many species of butterflies and moths including Henry’s elfin butterfly and the redbud leaffolder moth. Redbud is a great native tree for smaller landscapes!
